My Body is a Vessel- Exhbited as part of Art Walk Porty 2023
‘My Body is a Vessel’
My body has been a worthy vessel across the expansive voyage of my life. Once nubile, light, fast and nippy, it had to change shape, take on more weight and on many occasions, required extra sails to get me through treacherous seas. My body has been an outstanding workhorse, bearing the brunt of some terrible work conditions bestowed on it by me but despite this it has sailed on.
It has on three occasions had to carry some very precious cargo that has taken some significant toll on its hull but still it remains watertight, mostly. My body has been berated by me, despised for not being like some of the more sleekit vessels that skim by. But it’s my body, my vessel that, although probably in need of a new paint job, a good barnacle scrape and a varnish, has done me proud and I thank it for getting me this far and I celebrate it.
My Body is a Vessel will be part of a larger project ‘Sea Change’ that will explore the transition in life for women going through menopause, how it affects us physically and mentally, how society views us as we get older and how every bodies experience of this time of life is different, like a fingerprint. I also want to explore joyous elements such as freedom, camaraderie and community that you can find amongst others living the same experience.
